What began five years ago as a search for a student room grew into a personal and professional relationship with Upgrade Estate. Together, two generations look back on their experiences with Upgrade Estate, from their first impressions to choosing to invest and take on a job within the company.

Moeder Pamela en dochter Lies

How did you come into contact with Upkot at the time, and what appealed to you?

[Pamela] When we were looking for a student room in Ghent, Ter Plaeten and Ganda Upkot caught our eye. The concept was immediately different from what we were used to. The buildings looked fresh and modern, and the idea of an Upkot coach acting as a link between the students gave us confidence. However, there was a waiting list at the time, so we decided to invest.

[Lies] I felt welcome from day one. What really made the difference for me was that you had your own bathroom and a large terrace. At the same time, you have those cool communal areas and kitchen where you can easily get to know other students. That combination of having your own space and a sense of community is a real bonus.

“Every box for employee satisfaction is ticked. Everything has been thought of. (Pamela)

What insights have you gained about students' needs and preferences from your daughter's experience? Do these differ from your own student days?

[Pamela] When I was studying law in Leuven, I also lived in student accommodation. We just shared a corridor, without a communal kitchen or living area. There was only a caretaker, but he wasn't very involved. Activities or guidance? Those didn't exist. Now I see that it's very different at Upkot; a social structure makes a world of difference. Students now have the opportunity to live and really be part of a community. That was unthinkable in the past. You were completely on your own.

[Lies] It was only at the end of my studies that I realised how easily I had made friends at university. That was actually unprecedented.

Are there any other factors that made you realise that both working and investing at Upgrade Estate was a good choice?

[Lies] After completing my studies, I started working at Upgrade Estate. Initially as an intern, I subsequently decided to remain. What I frequently hear from colleagues and friends is that I have been very fortunate. It is a pleasant place to work.

[Pamela] Even in uncertain times, it remains a sound investment. Everything is arranged down to the last detail. In terms of peace of mind, that is significant. I work in HR for a large company and see how well Upgrade Estate takes care of their employees. Every box of employee satisfaction is ticked. Everything has been considered. As a parent and investor, that provides reassurance.
