Upgazet: As a musician among the younger generation
Johan is the oldest Upliving tenant. He has been living at Upliving BXL - The Brewery in Brussels for five years now. As one of the first residents, he has seen the community grow and evolve. In this interview, he shares his experiences of living with younger generations and what he values about it.
As a tenant, how did you experience starting out in a building with a mix of ages?
When I visited the building as a prospective tenant, it was still under construction. There weren't even any lifts yet — we had to climb up the outside wearing helmets. I initially chose an apartment on the third floor because I'm a bit afraid of heights. But in the end, I opted for the sixth floor: I'd rather pay a little more and go right to the top. Now I have two terraces, sun all day long and a view over the city of Brussels.
The age difference? No problem at all. On the contrary, I often get along best with younger people. In the beginning, a nice, close-knit group of residents formed in block B. We did things together, such as trips or small events. They also went out more often than I did. Many of those people have since moved away, but I have experienced many unique moments here.
You just mentioned joint activities. What kinds of things have you done together?
We went skiing three times with a group. That was really fun. The first time was with Upkot. It was a really cool experience, although for me personally, the accommodation could have been a little more comfortable than a classic student residence (laughs). But anyway, moments like that really strengthen the sense of connection in a community like that.
What do you consider important in a pleasant living environment?
You need to feel at home somewhere; that's the most important thing for me. Here, I have that. The view over Brussels is beautiful, the neighbours are friendly, and what I really appreciate as a musician is that the building is very well isolated. I play guitar and bass and have never had any complaints. In the beginning, there were sometimes wild parties, but that has decreased.

Occasionally, it can get a bit noisy on the terraces, but I just speak to them in a friendly manner. Usually, that solves the problem quickly. You have to be able to say that in a calm and clear manner. Don't make a drama out of it, just live together harmoniously.
Looking ahead, what do you think could be improved in the housing of the future?
We are increasingly living on our own, but humans are made to live together. Sometimes I would like to see more openness, genuine connection. Even here, where the atmosphere is quite good, you notice that some people are very sociable and others just keep to themselves.
That's okay, but sometimes it could be a bit more collective. Fortunately, there are initiatives, such as the vegetable garden. We grow tomato plants there and help each other take care of them when someone is on holiday. I find that valuable. I secretly dream of a place where we can make music together, a space where you can just sit together and play. That would make it complete.
