At Do Upkot, the Look & Feel team let the past do the talking. The grey tiles, silent witnesses of the old building, turned up during the renovation. Too much history to throw away, so they now form the basis of the entire design. Take a good look: you’ll spot them everywhere, in the tiled floors, the floor numbers, the coffee tables, the room numbers, the sayings in the kitchens and the signage. Not just to look at, but as a lasting piece of history that students live among every day.
Discarded bicycle wheels got a second life too: they hang in the corridors and reveal new eco-tips when you give them a spin. In the entrance hall, an artwork by Juulke Essers pays tribute to Mons and kot life. There was also a strong focus on second-hand materials, with second-hand furniture in the study café and the laundry room. Across the whole interior, only 25% new material was used.
Currently, only sustainable construction projects are justifiable. We go a serious step further: Do Upkot emits 50% less CO2 than an average new-build project. Curious about the technologies?
